Guangxi Facts

Guangxi( Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), an autonomous region of China created by Zhuang people, locates in southern China and borders Vietnam with its mountains terrain. Gui is the abbreviation of the province, for the former capital Guilin city, which is the center of Guangxi's culture, politics, and history.

Guang in Chinese means "expanse" which has big connection with the expansive region since the creation of Guang Prefecture in 226 CE. Guangxi was given provincial level status during the Yuan Dynasty. Since the establishment of New China in 1949, Guangxi was reformed as one of China's five minority autonomous regions.

Guangxi is a mountainous region. It is said that there are over one hundred thousand hills in Guangxi. Though it may be an exaggeration, visitors will be shocked by the numerous hills when they entered Yangshuo or Xingping through Guilin. The Nanling Mountains are found in the northeast border,

with the Yuecheng Mountains and Haiyang Mountains being its shorter branching ridges. The Dayao Mountains and the Daming Mountains locate near the center of the region. The Duyao Mountains and the Fenghuang Mountains locate to the north, and the Yunkai Mountains borders on its southeast. The highest peak is the 2,141 meters high Mount Mao'er which located in the Yuecheng Mountains.
