What Is The Best Time To Visit Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)?

When you google this question, the answer may be: Any time of the year.  Although we really want to offer something new, this is the truth. Huangshan is suitable for all seasons, and each season has its own characteristics.

Travel to Huangshan in Spring (Late March to May)


Weather

Huangshan has a relatively short spring, lasting from mid-March to mid-May, with flowers in full bloom and very fresh air. The average temperature ranges from -1 to 6ºC (30-43℉) in March, from 5 to 11ºC (41-52℉) in April, and from 9 to 15ºC (48-59℉) in May. 

Season Highlights

Walking on the mountain path of Huangshan in spring, you will see flowers blossom among steep cliffs and rocky crevices, birds hovering and singing on green pine branches from time to time, squirrels jumping on the path in front of you. You can feel the beauty of spring everywhere. With increasing temperature, the West China Sea Grand Canyon and Lotus Peak, which have been closed for a whole winter, will reopen to visitors. In addition, you can also experience the sea of clouds and hot springs in the Huangshan Mountains in spring. 

A visit to some ancient villages is your must after you get down the mountain, too. At the foot of Huangshan Mountain, there are some ancient small villages like Hongcun,  Shitan, Tangmo…and they look especially beautiful against the rape seeds flowers in rice paddies.

In spring, Mt. Huangshan is characterized by cloudy and rainy days. Remember to pack raincoats, antiskid shoes and warm clothes in case of low temperatures while climbing the mountain.


Travel to Huangshan in Summer (June to Mid September)


Weather

The summer time of the Mt.Huangshan starts from June to Mid September, with a moderate mean temperature of 20.7°C (69.26℉)by the quarter. It's a great escape from the scorching Chinese summer heat. Besides, Yellow Mountain belongs to subtropical monsoon climate, so it often rains, especially during summer. In the rainy season, there may be several rains in a single day, even thunderstorms happen suddenly.

Season Highlights

The summer in Mt. Huangshan presents you a cool world with pine shades everywhere. The dashing waterfalls on the cliffs contrasting the crystal-clear water in the mountain stream form unique waterscape scenery. On a summer dawn, it is the best time to watch the sunrise with extremely clear sky. In summer you can also see verdured peaks rising one upon another and hear the springs gurgling merrily. 

In summer, there is another place that presents the most beautiful scenery of the year. This is Chengkan. If you have plenty of time, you can arrange a half-day visit. Moreover,  you may take a cruise along Xin'an River to feel the cool summer and appreciate the rolling mountains on both banks.

Warm Tips

Since summer is the hot season for Huangshan travel, the hotels, admission tickets, food etc. are more expensive. Too many tourists come to visit the Yellow Mountain in summer, you will meet the long queues in the cable car stations.

Tourists had better not bring umbrellas due to the thunderstorms during the summer period. Besides summer clothing, raincoats and sun cream are also necessary.


Travel to Huangshan in Autumn (September to November)


Weather

From late September to November, Huangshan entered her autumn. During this period, the average temperature is about 7-13 ºC (44.6-55.4℉), which is quite comfortable. 

Season Highlights

The autumn scenery at Mt. Huangshan displays a magnificent landscape with clear sky and cool air. The red maple-leaves, yellow chrysanthemum on the slopes of the peaks and the prosperous green vegetation form a colorful Chinese painting of landscape. Having enjoyed the fall scenery of Mt. Huangshan, you will really begin to believe that the scenery on Chinese paintings indeed exists on the earth.

Warm Tips

The first week of October is another high season, being a national holiday, so Mount Huangshan is more crowded and it costs a bit more to travel and stay at hotels. Prepare shirts, sweaters and overcoat for the season. 


Travel to Huangshan in Winter (November to Mid March)


Weather

Winter lasts a long time here. With an average temperature ranging from-5 to 5 ºC (23-41℉), this period is the coldest season of Huangshan Mountain.

Season Highlights

To see Huangshan in winter vacation is another special experience different from all the other winter vacations. It is ranked by many hikers as the best period for visiting Huangshan, for appreciating the spectacular snow-covered landscape. 

If you want to visit Huangshan in winter, you can see the unique scenery of this season, including: winter snow, sea of clouds and Buddha light. After a freezing and strenuous hiking during winter, the hot spring situated at foot of Huangshan Mountain is a perfect way to relax and fresh.

Warm Tips

Please notice that the West Sea Grand Canyon and cable cars are usually closed in winter. This process usually lasts from early December to mid-March next year.

Very few tourists visit the mountain, so the mountainside is much less crowded and it is much cheaper to travel.

Mt. Huangshan enjoys a great reputation nationwide of being a safe mountain.  Whenever it snows, the snow fall will be promptly swept off the path to ensure the safety of the tourists
